From the onset of this project it became very clear that the artist immerses herself in sound. As a model, Belinda was used to plunging into the moment through music played during fashion shoots. Now as photographic artist creating self-portraits or directing a more complex scene involving a number of subjects in which she features – that same technique translates into her own working methodology. Locations become sets - music echoes around discovered caves, winds through corridors and spirals up stone stairs of abandoned castles. It fills the car when looking for suitable sites or travelling to a shoot, is there when sketching out her visions or making props and costumes and is even embedded within some of her images. Belinda is very aware of the power of sound and is rarely without it.

From using a single cello to reflect on Belinda’s quiet focus during meditation to the intense pulse of a piece I call ‘Devil At The Gate’ I have considered each sound and how it relates to the journey towards the realised image. Location recordings from photo shoots fuse with detuned strings, manipulated found sounds become instruments which then become beats, long single drawn out notes intentionally dwell and hang in the air to evoke land and seascapes – it grows, crescendos and subsides. I have tried to incorporate the artist’s attention to detail, the suspended moment of capture, the contemplative and the rock ‘n roll part of her character which fuels that playful theatricality!
